The Office of the College Secretary (OCS) together with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) held a recognition rites for the undergraduate students of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), Parangal para sa mga Mag-aaral 2017, on February 22, 2017 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Palma Hall Lobby. This was the first ever recognition ceremony organized by the OCS and the OSA with the primary aim of celebrating the various achievements of CSSP students. The event was hosted by Assistant Professor Jose Antonio R. Clemente and Assistant Professor Jan Robert R. Go.

The program opened with the singing of the national anthem and of an awit pasasalamat by the University of the Philippines (UP) Singing Ambassadors. To formally welcome the audience of students and faculty to the event. Dean Grace H. Aguiling-Dalisay, PhD gave her opening remarks. Dean Aguiling-Dalisay congratulated the students in attendance, and shared several accounts and success stories about the eventual future of CSSP graduates.

After the dean’s message, the Guest of Honor, Leslie E. Bauzon, PhD, approached the stand to deliver a congratulatory speech. Dr. Bauzon was the very first dean of CSSP after the College of Arts and Sciences was disbanded into the tri-colleges in 1983. Apart from recalling the history of the college even prior to the tri-college split (when Palma Hall was still known as the College of Liberal Arts), Dr. Bauzon mentioned many successful alumni of CSSP who became well-known in their respective disciplines in both the local and international level. He ultimately congratulated all the students and wished them continuous success as CSSP graduates have been known to accomplish.

An intermission number was given again by the UP Singing Ambassadors as they performed an acapella rendition of the song “The Circle of Life”, which earned an uproarious applause by the audience.

The main highlight of the event was the achievement awards proper. First to be recognized were the student leaders of CSSP primarily composed of the CSSP Student Council. Second to be recognized were the University and College Scholars of every department. University Scholars are those students who attained a minimum weighted average of 1.45 or better by the end of the semester whereas College Scholars are those students who attained a minimum weighted average of 1.75 or better by the end of the semester.
